Prior to Wednesday night’s Champions League match, England captain Harry Kane, a striker for Bayern Munich, defended Harry Maguire, a defender for Manchester United.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League match at the Allianz Arena against Manchester United, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has launched a fierce defense of England teammate Harry Maguire.
Maguire was relieved of his duties as club captain over the summer, which was a significant turning point in his recent decline. Maguire has yet to start a game for United this season. He has had a challenging year at Old Trafford, and the team tried to offload him during the summer transfer window.
Maguire continues to be an important player in England boss Gareth Southgate’s plans despite his persistent struggles at the club level. He was chosen to play in the Three Lions’ matches earlier this month against Scotland and Ukraine.
In the 3-1 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park last Tuesday, he scored an own goal after coming off the bench, drawing boos from the Scotland supporters each time he touched the ball. As a result, Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, launched a fiery defense of the center-back, calling the continued criticism of the former Leicester City star a “joke.”
Ahead of Bayern’s match against the Reds, Kane has joined Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate in strongly defending United defender Harry Maguire, who he played with against Scotland and assisted on England’s third goal.
Kane remarked, “I think H has received some extremely unjustified attention. In light of how the team [United] has performed recently, he was probably used as a bit of a scapegoat.
He is a fantastic guy and a really dedicated professional, and he is a really dear friend of mine. I’d go so far as to claim that he has been one of the best defenders in England history while wearing an England jersey since he is one of our best defenders currently.
“You are now subject to scrutiny on social media as part of the game, especially football. Knowing him, he will only want to work harder, achieve better, and maintain his focus.
As a nation, we are totally behind him. I am aware that Southgate, the coach, publicly supported him.
The main thing is that we have a really solid core inside our team with England. There will always be commotion around players. Going into huge games and large tournaments, that is what matters most.
