What transpired on Mason Greenwood’s Getafe debut, his first game since leaving Manchester United

Following his loan termination from Manchester United on the final day, Mason Greenwood made his La Liga debut for Getafe.

When Mason Greenwood came off the bench for Getafe in their 3-2 victory over Osasuna on Sunday, it was his first appearance in 18 months.

The 21-year-old was selected for Getafe for the first time since leaving Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window, but his debut wouldn’t come until much later in the match. With the score tied at 2-2 in the 77th minute, Greenwood entered the game. Ten minutes later, Nemanja Maksimovic scored the game-winning goal from a corner he had won.

It was the child’s first appearance since United suspended him in January 2022 as a result of accusations of attempted rape, abuse, and coercive control. The Crown Prosecution Service announced that all charges against him had been dismissed in February of this year. Greenwood has consistently refuted the accusations.

United said last month that they had finished their own investigation and decided it would be best for Greenwood to pursue other employment opportunities. His Old Trafford agreement is still in effect through 2025.

Getafe took the lead against Osasuna thanks to Stefan Mitrovic, but the visitors drew even just before halftime thanks to Iker Munoz. After the break, Jose Angel Carmona gave the home team the lead again, and shortly after that, an Ante Budimir penalty brought the teams back together.

After five games and only their second victory of the current league season, Maksimovic scored the game-winning goal four minutes from time on a corner that Greenwood had earned. This victory moves Getafe up to ninth in the La Liga standings.

When Spain’s national team travels to Real Sociedad the following Sunday, Greenwood might make his complete debut for the Spanish team.
