The first two significant summer acquisitions for Man United were Mason Mount and Andre Onana, but their transitions to Old Trafford have been markedly different.
In order to succeed the long-serving David de Gea at Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes thinks Andre Onana’s strong mentality will be essential.
In July, Onana became United’s second significant summer acquisition after a £47.2 million agreement with Inter Milan. The 27-year-old has been a reliable presence between the posts ever since flying directly to preseason practice in the United States.
Onana’s talent in possession helped convince Erik ten Hag to sign him, and the first few weeks at Old Trafford have put his shot-stopping skills to the test. Fernandes is aware of how much mental toughness it takes to play goal for United in addition to technical skills.
Naturally, if someone was chosen to replace Andre as Manchester United’s starting goalkeeper, he has to have a strong personality, Fernandes told the team’s reporters. “This club hasn’t had many goalkeepers in the past because David was here for 12 years and Edwin [van der Sar] came before him.
United may have the urgently required rapid cure.
“If he is playing that position right now, it is because he contributes to the team in some way. We can anticipate it from him since he has skills coming out of the back and is skilled at blocking shots.
While Onana’s first few months at United have gone well, Mason Mount has had a much harder time. The 24-year-old was brought in by Chelsea for £55 million at the beginning of the summer, but he has struggled to find his form and has missed the previous two matches against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal because of injury.
Although Mount hasn’t had the best of starts, no one can deny the midfielder’s effort on the field, and his new captain Fernandes praised that selfless mentality.
Mason is a good player, said the Reds captain. He is very talented, energetic, and capable. Everyone is aware of his abilities, but his drive and diligence speak for themselves.
“Everyone can see he’s here fully committed to giving it his all; he wants to support the squad and improve them. He is one of the athletes who constantly prioritizes the team. It’s far better to play with him than against him.
